One of our own SWR coaches, Marren Garcia, was nominated ( by Laura Watson, formerly of BCRA ) and accepted as a successful applicant to the ProMotion Plus "Coach Mentor/Apprentice Program" which runs in conjunction with BC Winter (and Summer ) Games. ProMotion Plus is one of three organizations in Canada dedicated to promoting opportunities for females in coaching. The program's goal is to increase the number of qualified female coaches in sport at club and provincial levels and moving towards national and international levels in future. Congratulations Marren!

Re: Helmet Expiration Dates
Dear Members,
BC Ringette has received inquiries related to the applicability of expiry date labels found on some helmets. We have investigated this issue with our insurance provider and confirm that for general safety reasons and insurance coverage considerations, any expiry dates found on helmets must be observed. Helmets where an expiry date is provided should not be worn past the date indicated.
Permitting the use of safety equipment that has exceeded its expiry date is considered an unsafe practice and may be a mitigating factor in assessing greater liability or create problems related to insurability should an accident involve equipment found to exceed the manufacturer’s expiration date.
Members are asked to ensure that all safety equipment in use is properly certified and in the case of helmets with expiry dates, ensure they are approved for use by the date indicated on the helmet. Helmets without manufacturer provided expiry dates are subject to the normal certification requirements.
What to look for: The expiration label on helmets is typically in addition to the normal CSA certification label -
In June, the National Ringette League announced that LMRL had been awarded a National Ringette League franchise that would begin play later in 2011. The LMRL Thunder kick off their inaugural season on the weekend of October 22/23 against the Saskatoon Wild in Burnaby, Port Coquitlam and Langley. Schedules, Rosters and Player Profiles can be found online at www.nationalringetteleague.ca
As part of the LMRL Thunder's mandate to promote and grow the sport of ringette in the Lower Mainland, all players registered in LMRL in the U9, U10, U12, U14, U16 and U19 divisions will be receiving free "Junior Thunder" season passes that give the players access to all LMRL Thunder games, practices and events all season long. We hope to see players at LMRL Thunder home games all season long, and we are sure you and your players will be blown away with the speed, skill and teamwork that will be on display during all NRL games this season.
The LMRL Thunder players and coaches are also available to run clinics or help out at practices in your local association throughout the season. Please contact me directly to set something up - many of the Thunder players are current coaches and ringette camp instructors, and all players are excited to be out in the community, helping to grow the sport and develop all players and coaches.
Ten of the 14 current Thunder players grew up playing ringette in the LMRL with local associations from the Bunny (U9) level up. We are also very excited to welcome the 2010 World Ringette Championship MVP Salla Kyhala and Team Canada's All-Time leading scorer Jenn Wakefield to our team.
We are extremely excited to get the season underway and we hope to see you and your players at a game this season.

Ringette on the Rick Mercer Report!
I am very pleased to report that BC Ringette’s status as a Core Sport for the 2012 BC Games has been confirmed. In a recent letter, BC Games President & CEO Kelly Mann noted:
“Sports that participated in the 2010 BC Winter Games were reviewed based on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Provincial Sport Organization and our society, as well as participation statistics, Head Coach certification levels and coaching development, officials development, the submitted long-term athlete development model, and how well the organization worked within the BC Games system. Sports must demonstrate that the BC Winter Games play an integral part of the sport’s athlete, coach, and officials’ development to higher levels of competition.
As a result of the review conducted by staff, and the approval of the BC Games Society Sport Committee, I am pleasedto inform you that Ringette will be included in the 2012 BC Winter Games as a Core Sport.”
For those who may not be aware, BC Games host communities are permitted to pick the sports they wish to host for their event, based on community capacity or interest. Non-core sports may be dropped in any given year. Because of this, Core Sport status is of great importance to ensure that should the games be held in an area that does not have an active ringette association (which has occurred), the host must still feature ringette. While this would likely not have been the case in 2012 where the BC Games are in Vernon, once Core Sport status is lost it is very difficult to regain. BC Ringette works diligently to develop it’s programming like coach certification and long term athlete development so we meet BC Games criteria for Core Sport status.
Thank you to all current and past volunteers at the provincial, zone, league and association level who have contributed to the ongoing success of our bi-annual BC Winter Games program.
Sincerely,
Wayne Leslie, Executive Director
