I am very pleased to report that BC Ringette’s status as a Core Sport for the 2012 BC Games has been confirmed. In a recent letter, BC Games President & CEO Kelly Mann noted:
“Sports that participated in the 2010 BC Winter Games were reviewed based on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Provincial Sport Organization and our society, as well as participation statistics, Head Coach certification levels and coaching development, officials development, the submitted long-term athlete development model, and how well the organization worked within the BC Games system. Sports must demonstrate that the BC Winter Games play an integral part of the sport’s athlete, coach, and officials’ development to higher levels of competition.
As a result of the review conducted by staff, and the approval of the BC Games Society Sport Committee, I am pleasedto inform you that Ringette will be included in the 2012 BC Winter Games as a Core Sport.”
For those who may not be aware, BC Games host communities are permitted to pick the sports they wish to host for their event, based on community capacity or interest. Non-core sports may be dropped in any given year. Because of this, Core Sport status is of great importance to ensure that should the games be held in an area that does not have an active ringette association (which has occurred), the host must still feature ringette. While this would likely not have been the case in 2012 where the BC Games are in Vernon, once Core Sport status is lost it is very difficult to regain. BC Ringette works diligently to develop it’s programming like coach certification and long term athlete development so we meet BC Games criteria for Core Sport status.
Thank you to all current and past volunteers at the provincial, zone, league and association level who have contributed to the ongoing success of our bi-annual BC Winter Games program.
Sincerely,
Wayne Leslie, Executive Director
